Tối 15/1 (giờ Việt Nam), lễ công bố đề cử Oscar lần thứ 87 năm 2015 diễn ra tại Nhà hát Samuel Goldwyn ở Beverly Hills, Hollywood (Mỹ) với lượng đề cử nhiều nhất dành cho 2 phim Birdman và The Grand Budapest Hotel, với 9 đề cử.
9 đề cử dành cho phim Birdman, gồm: Phim hay nhất, Nam diễn viên chính xuất sắc (Michael Keaton), Nam diễn viên phụ xuất sắc (Edward Norton), Nữ diễn viên phụ xuất sắc (Emma Stone), Quay phim xuất sắc (Emmanuel Lubezki), Đạo diễn xuất sắc (Alejandro G. Inarritu (Birdman) và The Wes Anderson (Grand Budapest Hotel) sẽ phải cạnh tranh danh hiệu Đạo diễn xuất sắc với Richard Linklater (Boyhood), người vừa nhận giải thưởng Quả cầu vàng dành cho Đạo diễn xuất sắc; Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher) và Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game).
Ở hạng mục Nam diễn viên chính xuất sắc nhất, sẽ là sự cạnh tranh của Steve Carell (Foxcatcher), Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), Michael Keaton (Birdman) và Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything).
Trong khi đó, ở hạng mục dành cho nữ Marion Cotillard (trong Two Days, One Night), Felicity Jones (trong The Theory of Everything), Julianne Moore (trong Still Alice), Rosamund Pike (trong Gone Girl) và Reese Witherspoon (trong Wild) sẽ cùng nhau cạnh tranh nhau danh hiệu Nữ diễn viên chính xuất sắc.
Nữ minh tinh Meryl Streep có đề cử Oscar thứ 20 trong sự nghiệp ở hạng mục Nữ diễn viên phụ xuất sắc với vai diễn trong phim Into the Woods. Ngoài ra, phim Into the Woods còn có 2 đề cử dành cho Thiết kế trang phục và Thiết kế sản xuất xuất sắc.
Ở hạng mục Phim nói tiếng nước ngoài xuất sắc tại Oscar 2015 là sự cạnh tranh của các phim Ida (Ba Lan), Leviathan (Nga), phim vừa nhận giải ở cùng hạng mục tại Quả cầu vàng 2015, Tangerines (Estonia), Wild Tales (Argentina) và Timbuktu (Mauritania).
Trong khi đó, hạng mục Phim hoạt hình xuất sắc là sự cạnh tranh của các phim Big Hero 6, Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Phim nhận giải Quả Cầu vàng xuất sắc nhất năm 2015, Song of the Sea và The Tale of Princess Kaguya.
Lễ trao giải Oscar 2015 sẽ diễn ra vào ngày 22/2 tại Nhà hát Dolby ở Hollywood.
